So you’re thinking about venturing out on your next trip with Fido? Sounds like a fun idea, but unless you’re well prepared, you may end up wishing you had left him at home.

But don’t get discouraged; traveling with pets is becoming as commonplace as traveling with children. In a sense, they really are our children. We feed them, clean up after them, groom them, praise them, and love them… why shouldn’t we take them along?

Problem is, some folks think just letting the family dog jump in the back seat is all it takes. Never mind securing that loved one in a car seat or harness like we do Junior. Why not? Okay, I’ll ask it again… why not?

Adopting An Older Golden Retriever

There are a lot of people who want to keep a Golden Retriever as a pet but are not happy with the thought of going through the puppy stage, especially older couples who are looking for a watchdog of sorts but cannot bring up a pup. Golden Retrievers are generally good tempered unless they have been ill treated by their owners. The older lot is of course more mature and their training is complete. They work well where they would be alone for long periods of time since Goldens are a breed that can adjust quite well. Age is not all that important as they fast settle down into their new homes.

Ring Worm in Dogs

Ringworm is one of the most common diseases in pets, especially dogs. Unlike its name, Ringworm is not a worm but fungi called Dermatophytes that thrives on dead tissues present on skin surface and follows circular path to spread infection.

Ringworm is an infectious skin disease and your pet usually picks it up from his surroundings like kennels, rodent burrows or from other animals who are already infected. There are about 35 species of ringworm that can affect dogs. The most common is ‘Mircosporum Canis’, which accounts for majority of ringworm cases

Have a Unique Custom Leather Dog Collar

If you have a dog you know that a dog collar is a must to have. The dog collar will make sure the dog is safe if separated from its loving owner. The custom leather dog collar today reflects the personality of the dog. They also reflect the character and style of the owner. The reason for this is because the owner is the one who picks out the dog collar. When you get a dog, it won’t take long to get close to the dog. When this happens you will want him as unique with his accessories as he is to you.

Hamster Care Requirements

Hamsters are the most popular rodents kept as pets. They are extremely easy to tame and take care of and are relatively inexpensive animals. Hamsters are a suitable pet for almost any household; children can even keep them!

There are many different types of hamsters: large, small, patterned, solid colored, longhaired and shorthaired. The most popular hamster is the Syrian. It is the largest variety and comes in either longhaired or shorthaired. The longhaired Syrian hamster is often called the “Teddy bear hamster”. There is even a hairless Syrian! It also comes in many colors such as golden brown, white, cinnamon, cream, rust, gray, lilac, honey, yellow and black. An adult Syrian hamster reaches a length of six to eight inches.

Dog Parks Emerging “Must Have” For Pet Loving Home Buyers

Home buyers across the country are adding in rising numbers a walk-to dog park to their new home search parameters. I first reported this trend in my annual survey; ” What’s In, What’s Out with Homebuyers in 2006″. Many first-time and repeat home buyers in suburban and urban communities want to include a nearby dog park as a day-to-day way to integrate their favored pooch into their next hood.

Pet Food That Makes Your Pet Ill

If you watch the news recently, you’ve seen the epidemic health crisis plaguing this nation’s cats and dogs in the early part of 2007: poisoned petfood that’s making pets ill.

Shortly after eating the tainted food, the animals have started suffering. These pets are having serious problems, including vomiting, lethargy, kidney failure and death for some animals. Though few animals have died (a couple dozen) the issue has affected many dog and cat lovers.

At first, people believed that the problem was a substance in rat poison in the food supply, namely the chemical aminopterin. Aminopterin is used for chemotherapy. While New York officials stated this, the FDA never confirmed the matter.

Fewer Dog Treats Make a Sweeter Pet

One common mistake made by a lot of pet owners is pampering your dog too much! Many people, when they hear their dog bark, either cuddle it, pat it, or feed it some type of dog treat. Although dog treats are popular, in a short time you will wind up with a dog that will whine, bark, or demand attention unnecessarily. This type of behavior teaches your pet to make a lot of noise whenever it wants attention. Henceforth, what your dog does all the time is bark! This is negative behavior modification and should be refrained from as much as possible to avoid spoiling your pet. After all, that is how your dog is trained, so reward the good habits only, never the bad ones.
