Everyone with pets, whether dogs or puppies, needs to have a veterinary surgeon to turn to in an emergency. They do a wonderful job, and you should never ignore a pet’s suffering. However, it is a waste of money to attend the Vet’s surgery when the problem is one you can solve at home. This is a short guide to dealing with minor ailments as a form of Pets’ First Aid. If the symptoms persist you can still contact the vet. Dog health need not always be a costly worry to the wise pet owner.

Information on the Chihuahua

The world’s smallest breed of dog is the Chihuahua. It is a mystery of how this little but forceful breed of dog originated. Many experts have suggested that the Chihuahua came to America with the Spanish armies of Hernando Corte around the year 1519. Other experts believe that the Chihuahua has been around since the ninth century. These experts believe that the Chihuahua was bred by the Toltecs of Mexico. This type of dog received its name from the state of Chihuahua in Mexico.

Saltwater Aquariums And The Challenge To Maintain Them

Saltwater aquariums are intended to be used to keep marine fish, and tend to be more challenging to maintain than freshwater aquariums. This is due to saltwater aquariums supporting a more complex ecosystem, which need more patience and expertise to master. Usually the saltwater aquariums are constructed of glass or acrylic and include biological, chemical and mechanical filters.

Some saltwater aquariums need separate provisions for lighting, hood and stand. In some tanks, heaters too can also be used. Many of the most popular saltwater aquariums will have a capacity ranging from 30 gallons up to 60 gallons. Industrial places that house marine aquariums are generally life sized that are able to provide a close to natural environment.

Cyanuric Acid in Dog Food Not on Recall List

A forensic toxicology report states that cyanuric acid was present in a sample of commercial dog food that purports to be lams Large Breed dog food.

There is the possibility that the bag was poisoned by miscreants after leaving the production plant. This remains to be seen, but is yet another example of the potential dangers that may inhabit the containers of some commercial dog food.

The dog food was taken from an open bag so further investigation is still necessary. The accuracy of the laboratory report though is convincing as the methods used for testing have been certified.

Questions to Ask When Choosing a Dog for Family Life

Dog’s come in all shapes and sizes – out of all the dogs you’ve ever met you’ve probably been more attracted to some breeds than others. Perhaps you had a dog when you were growing up and want the same breed for your children. But more needs to be determined than breed or size when choosing a family dog.

How do you choose? What do you need to know? Here are some questions you must ask when choosing a dog for family life:

How old are your children?

Cat Worms

Roundworms and tapeworms are the most common types of worms that infect cats. Some of the infesters are namely, Toxocara cati (roundworm), Toxocaris leonina (roundworm), Diplidium caninum (tapeworm), Taenia taeniaeformis (tapeworm), Aelurostrongylus abstrusus (lungworm) and Toxoplasma gondii (parasite). Unless the cat has a heavy infestation (thus making the symptoms more obvious), it isn’t always easy to tell if it has worms. It has been estimated that 5 out of 10 cats have worms at any point of time. Both roundworms and tapeworms can be picked up from the cat’s prey, rodents and birds for example. Roundworms are passed from cat to cat via eggs and larvae in their feces. These eggs and larvae continue to live in the soil for months or even years. The cat picks them up on its coat and paws and then ingests them while grooming - thus infecting the cat, and so the cycle goes on. Worming treatments for your cat must be carried out on a regular basis so as to prevent re-infestation. The symptoms will range from none to vomiting, diarrhea, pot-bellied appearance, dehydration, weight loss and loss of normal condition.

Our New “Minor Children” in the American Family - The Law, the Implications For Pets

What? A “Pet trust”? Pets as our “children”? We are supposed to consider including our pet animals - dogs, cats, birds, etc - as “family members” and “loved ones” who should be covered in our testamentary trust or will and our estate planning? Aren’t these just mere “animals”?

Well, not quite so any more these days!

Americans own a huge number of pets, including about 68 million dogs and 73 million cats, according to a 2000 estimate by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association. What is even particularly fundamental, however, from the sociological standpoint and the transformation of the American society, is this: That for a great many Americans, and a growing number of them, their home pets are now considered a bona fide “member of the family,” and not just “animals” any more.

Aggressive Cats - Not Necessarily a Bad Thing

The trainability of cats has always been put to question, mostly because of the constant comparison between them and their canine counterparts. In actuality, cats are quite intelligent and can develop better behavior or even be trained to operate simple mechanisms. The reason for this is that cats are self-sufficient whether they are trained or not. It’s part of their instinct.

Another reason for the belief that cats cannot be trained is the case of aggressive cats. There are several categories that aggressive cats may fall into depending on how they exhibit their aggression. These categories are play aggression, defensive aggression, misdirected aggression and territorial status aggression. The way to handle a situation with an aggressive cat is to determine what aggression the cat is exhibiting.

The Case AGAINST Raw Frozen Pet Foods

For some 25 years I have alerted the public to the dangers of exclusively feeding heat processed foods. Companion animal feeding has progressed – actually digressed – from table scraps and real foods the family could spare to today’s “100 % complete” processed foods in primarily kibble form, with some canned and semi-moist also available. The foods appear to be scientific and improved, but they’re far worse for the animals. Not only is nutrient value diminished by heat, but a spectrum of toxins is created. Additionally, the singular feeding of processed food has led to the spurious “100% complete and balanced” claim that is both logically and scientifically flawed.

The English Cocker Spaniel: Game Bird Dog

The traditional sport of hunting the “gamecock” is the foundation of the word “Cocker”. The term “Cocker” denotes those spaniels which were used for hunting this bird. Many years ago hunting dogs were classified according to size. Those over 25 pounds were classified as Field Spaniels and those under 25 pounds were classified generally as Cocker Spaniels. Selective breeding of Spaniels and other hunting breeds in the nineteenth century began to distinguish and discriminate between the different types of Spaniels.
