Two types of dog ticks are commonly found in the United States. These are the American dog tick and the brown dog tick. Their scientific names are Dermacentor variabilis and Rhipicephalus sanguineus, respectively. The brown dog tick does not pose a threat to humans, as it rarely feeds on them.

American dog ticks are reddish-brown. The female has a silver spot, while the male has silver lines on the body. They are found in grasslands and woods. Larvae and nymphs feed on mice, squirrels, and other small animals, while adults feed on cattle, deer, raccoons, dogs, and humans. Adults are active between April and June. These ticks can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularemia to humans.

The Affenpinscher’s German name means Monkey-Terrier and refers to the breed’s comical, bewhiskered face and slightly undershot jaw. Another name for this dog is Monkey Pinscher. In France the Affenpinscher is known as Diablotin Moustachu, which translates to Moustached Little Devil.

Germany claims origin of the Affenpinscher. It is felt the little dog was bred elsewhere in Europe as well. The Affenpinscher originated in the seventeenth century and descended from terriers that inhabited farms and shops of central Europe. In his neck of the woods, the Affenpinscher was a confident sharp-witted little hunter.

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is a pleasant and intelligent dog that loves humans. She is generally a watchdog. She can do well with other pets and dogs, especially if socialized when young. She also generally loves considerate children that she has been raised with. As a reminder, never leave a child unsupervised with a puppy or dog.

Approximate Adult Size

The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the male Welsh Springer Spaniel is 17 to 19 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 40 to 45 pounds. The female ranges from 16 to 18 inches to the withers and 35 to 45 pounds.

A Little History on the Persian Cat

Persian cats have beautiful long silky hair and their long hairs float everywhere they visit, including your lap. In the sixteenth century, Persian cats walked the roads in Turkey and some other areas. Some people believe that the longhaired Persian is a mutation of the shorthaired Persian from Egypt. Some believed that the difference in hair length was triggered by the cool weather conditions.

The Beauceron is a large dog that weighs between 75-110 lbs. Their height ranges between 24″ to 27 ½”. Loyal, protective and territorial, the Beauceron makes an excellent watchdog that will ward off any intruders or those that they perceive as a threat to their family and home.

Although the Beauceron is not currently recognized by the AKC, an application for recognition has been filed. Acceptable colors for Beaucerons include black and tan or tri-color (black, tan and grey). They are double coated with a medium length, dense, coarse and straight outer coat and a dense undercoat. Their coat is easy to care for and requires minimal grooming.
